Way back in 1969 I graduated in biology, and went into microbiological research in the scientific civil service. After over fours years of that, I was ready for more of a challenge, and rather by accident found myself selling medicines to doctors as a medical rep. I was pretty soon attracted into the world of clinical research and have stayed in that for most of the time since. Some key milestones have been:
- Single-handedly managed a two-year 12,000-patient cardiovascular prevalence study, working with leading academic centres (1984-86).
- Led a small independent CRO as owner-manager for 12 years, while most competitors disappeared or were taken over by larger companies (1987-1999).
- Wrote a chapter on clinical trials for a book on pharmaceutical project management (1994-95).
- Built up a unique consultancy practice in clinical project management (1989-date).
- In 1997, conceived the idea for a "holistic" approach to clinical trial project management using the Internet. Negotiated with investors, partners and clients. Forged a team to deliver the system in record time (4 months). Led pilot studies to completion on time with 100% data quality.
